Answer: You must reduce your input voltage to about 110 volts! Choose a voltage reduction unit that is no less than 1000 watts.
I know from experience that if you don’t there will be a loud BANG, and replacements will be needed.

Answer: The index lock locks the headstock in place to tighten or remove the chuck or faceplate easily. Just be sure the lathe is completely stopped first.

So yes, using the lower speed setting at the initial start had no problems.
